Exercise & Fitness Habits Of Craft Beer Enthusiasts : Survey Reveals All!


As part of the launch of Craft Health Co we decided to conduct some industry research and recently ran a survey designed to understand the level of physical activity among those involved in the craft beer scene. The survey was carried out among craft beer drinkers, industry professionals, and other individuals that hold a passion for craft beer.

We all recognize the greatness of craft beer, and it comes as no surprise that it has experienced tremendous growth and popularity in recent years. In Australia alone, craft beer production has averaged a 5.0% annual increase between 2017 and 2022!

While many of us are aware that maintaining a balanced and active lifestyle is crucial for overall well-being, there has been curiosity about how the love for craft beer intersects with our levels of physical activity.

The Survey Asked : How many hours per week do you dedicate to exercise/physical activity?

The survey received an overwhelming response with 1,123 participants across multiple social platforms. The results highlighted both encouraging and concerning trends which shed light on the exercise and fitness habits of various demographics.

The Results

Segment 1 (0-2 hours)

Approximately 25% of respondents (283 votes) reported dedicating 0-2 hours per week to exercise or physical activity. While it’s commendable that a quarter of participants engage in some form of physical activity, it is important to remember that a sedentary lifestyle can have detrimental effects on overall health.

Segment 2 (3-5 hours)

Around 36% of respondents (400 votes) reported dedicating 3-5 hours per week to exercise which was the most common range across the survey. This segment demonstrates a commitment to staying active, showing a conscious effort to maintain a healthy lifestyle alongside their love for craft beer. However, is this enough and can improvements be made? We think so…

Segment 3 (6-9 hours)

Almost identical numbers to Segment 1, a significant proportion of respondents, accounting for 25% (282 votes), reported dedicating 6-9 hours per week to exercise. This group serves as an inspiration within the craft beer community, showcasing the dedication and motivation needed to prioritize their physical well-being. They act as shining examples of how a healthy lifestyle and passion for craft beer can coexist harmoniously – well done to all!

Segment 4 (10+ hours)

Lastly, 14% of respondents (158 votes) proudly reported spending 10 or more hours per week engaging in exercise or physical activity. These individuals exemplify the pursuit of an active lifestyle, reaping the rewards of their commitment and discipline. Their efforts should be celebrated and serve as an inspiration to others in the community. We understand that not everyone can dedicate such time to keeping active, however kudos to those that do!

Benefits of Balance

Keeping fit can have various physical and mental benefits for anyone, in particular those that like to indulge in drinking craft beer. These benefits are endless and can include improved cardiovascular health, increased muscle strength and endurance, reduced risk of chronic diseases, weight management, improved sleep, reduced stress and anxiety, and enhanced mood and cognitive function. We believe that incorporating physical activity into your routine whilst enjoying craft beer in moderation may help you achieve some of these benefits, without sacrificing your social life.

While the survey results provide a mixed picture of exercise habits within the craft beer industry, there is a clear need for increased physical activity among its members, particularly in Segment’s 1 & 2.

As the craft beer industry continues to flourish, it is imperative that its members embrace a well-rounded and active lifestyle. The survey results shed light on the exercise habits within the craft beer community, and we believe emphasizes the need for increased physical activity.

Craft Health Co will soon be undertaking its first event in July 2023, whereby a group of local craft beer drinkers will get together for a 7km Hike on a Saturday morning at Toohey Forest, with the finish line at a local Brisbane brewery, Hiker Brewing Co.
